Slips and Slabs: Surface Decoration and Hand-building Workshop

Saturday 31st January - Sunday 1st February 2026, 10am - 4pm

Glasgow Ceramics Studio, WASPs Artist Studios, 77 Hanson Street, G31 2HF

10 spaces available

In this workshop we will be using plaster moulds to print with coloured slip onto terracotta clay and then hand-build objects with these decorated slabs. Using a variety of textured and non-textured moulds, you will learn how to print layers of slip, creating depth with paper stencils, stamps, roulettes and slip trailing. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own textures from home to experiment with! This workshop is aimed at those with experience of ceramics who are looking to try new techniques, however, if you have limited experience but are keen to try please let me know as this may also be for you!

Day 1: Introduction & overview of techniques. Printing & layering from textured moulds onto slabs which can then be cut and made into a range of hand-built forms, e.g. soap dishes ~ mugs ~ jugs.
Making of stamps and roulettes for use on Day 2.

Day 2: Use flat plaster batts to slip trail, paint and print onto clay slabs, using stamps and roulettes to add texture. Again creating forms from these slabs.

Included in outcomes: a selection of 3 pieces to be fired and glazed in a transparent glaze. Additional pieces can be glazed & fired for a fee.

The workshop will run both days from 10am—4pm. Tea, coffee & snacks will be available, but please bring a packed lunch with you. There are Cafes & a Co-op close by.

I am offering one free space on the workshop in exchange for assistance with making tea & coffee and cleaning over the weekend. This is aimed at someone who is unwaged / low income / at the start of their career, who would otherwise be unable to attend - please email me at camillejb@live.co.uk if this is you!
